Contact

We interact by talking to the people closest to us. An action or event is converted into a mental image, and is communicated by words, sentences, paragraphs to create a mental image in the minds of our friends, family, and neighbors. They, in turn, do the same. In this manner, an idea propagates over large distances through a community of interconnected people.

In this exhibit, visitors immerse themselves in a giant “lattice-community” of spheres, and create “events” by touching and moving the spheres. These disturbances in the lattice are “communicated” by the movement of the spheres. Interactions via collisions and vibrations with other spheres are visually converted into chain reactions of light.

To transform mechanical movement of someone's touch into light, we used a low-tech methodology, where each sphere is an independent circuit with it’s own LED and battery pack. When the sphere is displaced beyond a certain angle, the circuit closes. Thus, long-range patterning of light occurs through contacts and connections between independently acting bodies.

40+08

This exhibit was created for the 40+08 Art Marathon in the Negev and displayed during the Beer Sheva Light Festival, 2017. In 40+08, selected artists are assigned to groups, and given a theme, a location, a limited budget and 48 hours to brainstorm, design and assemble an exhibit. This work was done in collaboration with Rony Ginosar, Itamar Serfaty, and Daniel Singer.
